In 1847 a young wannabe naturalist published his first scientific ‘paper’ – a short note in the Zoologist describing his discovery of a rare beetle that he had located in the Neath Valley.
His name was Alfred Russell Wallace and today, he is acknowledged as having independently developed the theory of evolution at the same time as Charles Darwin and is considered one of the most important thinkers on nature that ever lived.
