Pryderi, King of Dyfed, is the only character to feature in all four branches of the medieval tales of the Mabinogi. He was born in Aberth (Narberth), Pembrokeshire – the son of Pwyll and Rhiannon.
Pryderi is a truly liminal figure – his father dwelled for a year in the otherworld knows as Annwn and Pryderi retains contact with Arawn, king of Annwn – even receiving a gift of pigs. When the trickster Gwydion steals the pigs Pryderi pursues him to the northern kingdom of Gwynnedd where they battle and Pryderi is slain.
